Extended Access GP Programme

“MKGP Federation’s Extended Access is an example of NHS service collaboration at its best, with improved patient care at its core.”

Part of a national NHS programme commissioned by the CCG, the Extended Access service supports patients in Milton Keynes by delivering approximately 200 hours of extra appointments each week. These appointments are outside the usual GP hours and delivered between 18:30 and 20:00 on weekday evenings and between 09:00 and 12:00 Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Appointment types are a mix of face to face consultations, telephone calls and
Nurse/Health Care Assistant appointments. Extended Access appointments are booked through the patient normal GP Surgery, but patients may see a clinician at another surgery or a central hub. The latest IT systems enable these clinicians to have full access to your medical record, so long as you give your consent.

Clinical Pharmacists

“MKGP Federation contracts with 25 member practices who employ 7 Clinical Pharmacists. The aim is for clinical pharmacists to operate across all of our member practices.”

Studies have shown that including a Clinical Pharmacist in the GP Practice Team can:

  • Reduce the number of unnecessary medicines patients take or prescribe
    new ones, improving patient outcomes.
  • Save each GP in a practice up to 2 hours every day, by conducting repeat
    prescription and medicines reviews with patients.
  • Achieve prescribing budget savings, helping GP Practices continue or
    develop other essential services.

Training Services

“Good quality training is essential in delivering up to date medical care, but organising it can be time-consuming and difficult. MKGP Federation helps to deliver this resource for its members.”

MKGP Federation will run and organise training sessions for staff from member practices, both clinical and non-clinical, and of course for its own employees. Training is planned and delivered in accordance with local needs and we work with the CCG to ensure alignment with their requirements.

Training organisation, attendance and admission is fully managed on behalf of our member practices leaving the practice administration team to concentrate on delivering patient care.
